ViDEOSKiN III is the third edition of the ever evolving film festival featuring contemporary dance. This year, in addition to three packed evenings of films at the magnificent Movie Garden in Pokhara, Nepal,
ViDEOSKiN presents DREAMER; a breathing organism of interconnected works of dance and live performance, cinema and visual art by Amsterdam based choreographer and dancer and interdisciplinary artist Andrea Hackl.

A tale about birth and death.
GARDEN PARTY – Didier MULLERAS – France – 4:45
The idea for this film was born during a visit to the botanical garden in Rio de Janeiro. There was a woman, alone, sitting on a bench, who kept getting up, going around the bench as if she was looking for something, and then sitting down again. She did this without interruption, in cyclical iterations, sometimes punctuated by long pauses, during which she turned her head, right and left, seeming to talk to people sitting next to her. But there was no one there. Her movements, a mixture of nervous gestures followed by almost perfect stasis, were reminiscent of the very particular gestures of the actress Gena Rowlands in the film “A Woman Under the Influence” by John Cassavetes. This inspired the choreography and movement direction of the dancers in this film. Parks and gardens are the immobile witnesses of our lives, of our desires, of our thoughts. Flowers look at us, listen to us, accompany us, like calm and discreet spectators of our inner adventures.
Waveform – Luciane Pinto – Brazil – 1:48
A Dance improvisation inspired by a sequence of movements exploring the frequencies of waves and nodules in and around the body. The waveform, or ripple, is possibly the oldest signature of all biological life. Everything in this universe seems to move in cycles of gradual change, suggesting that all life formed from this alternating process. The human spine is a composite of waves, a study in intervals and scales. We could think of dancing as consciousness and playing with the waves. Music can also be understood as an auditory map of the pulsation, the conscious composition of frequency, a way of allowing us to perceive an accentuated phase of the wave. Change the accent and the quality of the time changes, inspiring a different physical and expressive response.

The occurrence of colours by night – Sophie Lenglachner – Germany – 5:07
The dystopian genderfluid fashion of textile artist Sophie Lenglachner focuses on the beauty of darkness and reflective shimmers of light. The choreography of contemporary dancer Jan Kollenbach plays with the dynamic of oscillating between shadow and brightness. The textile as a canvas leaves its state as an inanimate object to conquer a ruinous industrial landscape.
Spiralling Into Desire – Roohi Dixit – India – 15:00
The Desire Project explores how we hold desire in our body. Of the firm belief that reclaiming and having agency around our desire is a path towards true empowerment, the project invites us to imagine what is possible for the community when eros is equally prioritized as logos. The latest iteration of the Desire project is a Movement x Film collaboration titled Spiralling into Desire. This film traces a woman’s descent into her deep body to access and retrieve her true autonomy. The film also draws parallels from the first epic poem ‘The descent of Innana’ which narrates the story of the Sumerian goddess Innana’s descent into the underworld, to visit her sister Ershikegel – the queen of the dead. Separated, the two sisters represent the Madonna/Whore split, a dangerous consequence of patriarchy. The descent begins the journey towards healing this split.
Self(i.e.;) – Laura Iancu – USA – 3:44
A short film about the hallucinatory effect of over-articulating one’s image through reappointing the functionality of technologies solely designed to produce social capital and a comforting sense of individuality. Beyond provoking sensations of the uncanny, hacking into high-production self-representation could also point to a purposeful crafting of new weapons of camouflage and dissimulation though the joke, the negligible and the obfuscation of hypervisibility.

Formless – Blandine Vives – France – 3:08
A short film about the idea of transformation. In an empty space, a body evolves facing the camera. Between escape and confrontation, the movement is imagined from a membranous body, leaving behind all human mechanisms. A matter in constant deformation spirals and dissolves in an aquatic environment.
Unspoken – William Armstrong – Botswana – 7:05
A film centred around world-class contemporary choreographer Paul Lightfoot (Artistic Director of the Netherlands Dance Theatre) losing his father during the pandemic. Not permitted into the hospital to say goodbye, he began working with a Danish dancer remotely to create a performance that processes the emotions he and many have shared worldwide. The result is a look behind the curtain into the process of a modern master interpreting loss into physical form – and a powerful beacon of hope to carry us through uncertain times.
Turned to Stone – Sarah Konner, Austin Selden – USA – 13:47
A dance horror fairytale. Inside an imaginative queer colorful landscape is space to consider how violent actions are passed from one to another, how different versions of ourselves create our stories, and what natural landscapes may be trying to teach us in post-capitalist worlds. Infatuation with pleasure both leads to depth of experience and connection, but potentially also a loss of connection with the beings and world around us.
Sentient Beings – Sonya Stefan & Stephanie Castonguay – Canada – 5:42
The sounds and images of artists Stefan and Castonguay blend together in a common quest to transmit a sense of awareness of the interconnectedness between all beings. Sonya’s images zooms into miniature worlds as well as grandiose natural wonders in which manifest elements of the earth. During a daily walking practice, images of the shifting natural world are collected with both digital and 16mm apparatus and then composited to create meditative loops. Echoing Stefan’s universe, the disruptive sound from Castonguay seeks to play with sonic textures by blending sounds of nature with electrical impulses. Composed of errors, accidents and bugs induced by his own sound machines, such as a pirated CD player and a modified scanner head, Castonguay explores the interconnection between the sonic and tactile senses.

Hors is a dance film on the border of surrealism. It is carried by a reflection on the interior and
exterior places. Two women-landscapes merge into one another and transpose themselves into
distinct places, from winter landscapes to squeaky uninhabited places, in a quest towards their
place of belonging, if there is one. Dissonance between calm and discomfort, the images tell a
story that goes on under the flesh, in the interstices of the Self and the Other and proposes the

Shadows Smile For You is a shifting durational macro view of the body. Skin as landscape, a place to contemplate and listen from. The work was created as a music video for the original composition by Joshua Van Tassel. This project is funded in part by FACTOR, The Government of Canada, and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters.
Herbarium – Iwona Pasińska – Poland – 13:00
A fairy-tale episode, told with tenderness, gushing with the intense colours of flowers and élan vital. Choreography composed to a suite by Edward Grieg and presented by the artists-dancers of the Polish Dance Theatre takes the audience into the world of flora. It allows to explore a day in the life of a plant from the moment it blooms to the end, drowned in warm nostalgia. We invite you to immerse yourself in the beautiful world of flowers and leaves, in the greens, reds and purples transitioning to the greys and browns of the autumn. And all this told with movement to the rhythm of the dynamic sounds of the suite Peer Gynt op. 1 performed by Trondheim Symfoniorkester & Opera.

During a nighttime visit to a museum, an unforeseen connection between a woman and a painting triggers an unexpected journey between the real and the unreal.
ALL SHE LIKES IS POPPING BUBBLE WRAP – Ioanna Paraskevopoulou – Greece – 17:28
The screen is split in two. One side shows a montage of archival film images, the other side shows the performer in dialog with the images. Seeking to create a kind of audio-visual choreography composed of micro-movements and objects, the artist explores the correlations between sound, image, and the body, as well as the potential to exchange information across two moving images screened in parallel. This process leads to a playful experiment: a designated dramaturgical act on the part of the performer enters into discourse with the archival material to nurture non-synchronous realities, pushing them into unique new perspectives and dimensions. How do two parallel activities affect the viewing process? How can the different temporalities of two images lead to multiple performative correlations and/or abstractions? What correspondence discovery mechanisms are activated in attempts to formulate a virtual fake entity?
TA MARA – Iwona Pasińska – Poland – 10:00
This production was inspired by the life and paintings of Tamara Lempicka. The film consists of two, polar opposite approaches to imagery, that merge into an ambiguous yet enticing portrait of a woman. One one side, TA MARA is overwhelmed by an artistic frenzy that awakens her inner demon, on the other – she is calm, frozen in a state of perpetual waiting. These extremes, similar to the sides of Muskau Park, form one single unity. The expressed movements of female dancers from the Polish Dance Theater team reflect the elegance, precision and figurality of Łempicka’s paintings.

June 2020. All our normal reference points are gone. Disorientation. Thinking changes, patterns slip by, can any new possibilities emerge? A dancer moves as if slipping between the past and the future. Reflecting on expectations and loss, a moment for transition opens up. Committing to the uncertainty, change is embraced.

A concert experience becomes entangled with an archive of queer gesture, body memory, and identity formation, explicating how activities carried out behind closed doors carries particular resonances for queer boys.
Memory of the Forgotten – Marta Arjona, Maite Blasco, Raquel Rodríguez, Joan Arjona – Spain – 10:00
A dance short film that pays tribute to the women that died in the Oblates prison-convent in Tarragona due to the hard prison condicions and to the only woman shot in the city during Franco’s repression. This work wants to keep alive and document the memory of all this women through the witness of their lives and their stance in prison before being buried in a common grave in Tarragona’s cemetery. This production, based on true facts, is an adaptation of the book, with the same title, written by Tecla Martorell, from Tarragona, and of the show, with the same title, created by Tarragona’s based dance company “La Im.Perfecta”. The audiovisual producer DansPXL joins history, literature, dance and audiovisual for giving voice to our nearest past.

If we consider Einstein’s space-time concept, we end up with an object where everything that happened and everything that will happen, is understood inside. Through it, we are driven by a vehicle, let’s call a bus, completely autonomous, that goes in a single direction, to the front, and has a single window, the rear. This vehicle, astronomer Arthur Eddington called The Arrow of Time. This idea, although depressingly deterministic, is difficult to ignore in view of the already proven plasticity of time, even when we consider Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, where the act of observing something, alters its result. A concept that does not invalidate a deterministic Universe, rather, allows the Interpretation of Many Worlds by Hugh Everett, also known as Multiverse.
PungJeong.Gak (風精.刻) A Town with a Blue Hill – Joowon Song – Republic of Korea – 15:27
Hongseok from Taejinsa textile factory and Youngsun from Sunhong supermarket spend their day roaming about in the neighbourhood. From Taejinsa, past the barber shop and textile factory to the 600-year-old maidenhair tree, they hop over empty houses on the hill that have been inhabited at one point. All the places in this neighbourhood are their playground and life’s temporal-space at the same time, ranging from the corner from which trains can be seen, the intersection between the hanok area, Western-style house area, the apartment complex, and the stairway where dead bodies were stacked during the Korean War, to the clothes line on Youngsun’s rooftop. In their journey on Cheongpa Hill, a neighbourhood sentenced to death in the name of urban redevelopment, Youngsun, Hongseok, and traces of life glimmer. Drawing from poet Choi Seung-ja’s “Do You Remember” Cheongpa-dong, Youngsun and Hongseok sing in bodily gestures to the city light down the hill. “And now, like worn-out shoes without an owner / When I wander aimlessly in the field / Do you remember Cheongpa- dong // The winter from a few centuries ago / When we lay ourselves on top of each other like flower petals / Drifting away in the snow-clad dream” – excerpt from “Do you Remember” Cheongpa-dong (1981)

Terrain, filmed in the desert region of Murcia, southern Spain, depicts a body in a vast mountainous landscape. What story can a body in this space provoke? How does a body surrender to natural forces: the unforgiving contours of a jagged terrain, an inhospitable climate, and the relentless teasing of insects? When is movement authentic, when is it artificial? How does the acquisition of learned behavior and dance technique influence habits, choices, and realities? The film explores these questions, highlighting the contradictions between the natural and the man-made.

(The act of accompanying or escorting, especially for protective purposes.) A group of travellers of unknown origin arrive out of nowhere into an open landscape. Over the course of a day, they explore and scan the environment with their unique handmade triangular antennae. Through their sensual decoding of information and hypnotic choreography of sign language, a necessity of care for this strange and beautiful planet emerges…
Jumping from A-Z – Suzanne Miller – Canada – 4:03
In my dreams I can fly. Performed for the camera, “Jumping from A-Z”, gestures through an invented movement alphabet while jumping. Airborne, the slow motion effect defies gravity and presents the dancer into a magical realm of disbelief.

The idea for the video was to create our own artistic document of personal plastic usage. Not a critique as such. More an acknowledgement of how damn useful plastic can be, how beautiful along with how permanent and problematic. We collected all our personal plastic for a 2 month period. We filled a room. It was a massive and sobering amount. We used most of it in the video.

‘Id’ follows six dancers in communion, each driven by their own instinctive impulses which manifest fast and slow. Propelled like machines through dispositions and space, oscillations of awareness illuminate shared conflicts — within the self, the couple and the tribe.
Patient Spider – Peter Sparling – USA – 7:06
A vertical strip of late-afternoon sunlight cast on a wall of an apartment in Paris inspired this slow dance of the nude figure as mobile canvas. Images are painted and woven into a kaleidoscopic web via video editing. A setting of a Walt Whitman poem, the musical score by Yehuda Yannay completes the work’s hypnotic spell.

It’s Dawn. A body lays motionless, in silence. Then, suddenly, but in response to an unseen and irregular metronome, the body begins to move. It seems like seeking its own movement, its harmony and vital rhythm, before starting something new.

Water – Leonardo da Vinci called it ‘the blood of the planet’. A group of people emerges from the water. They try to resist the current of the river and the stream of people in the city, but have to surrender to the flow and are washed ashore. On the shore, the stranded seek for hold and refuge. In the course of the film ‘against or with the flow’ and ‘resistance and devotion’ manifest as a primal instinct, as a survival strategy.

An artist suffering from severe writers block relies on the friendship of their dog in this multi-genre sci-fi short. Based on many true stories, this video-animation hybrid ruminates the relationship between dancing and earthly survival at the “end of the world”.
SHADOW – Francesca Jandasek – USA – 9:04
I first got the idea for this film while researching the Romanian Legend of the Arges Monastery. In the legend, a pregnant woman is immured to make the walls of the monastery stand. After further research, I came across the belief of the “stahie,” or shadow, an ancient Eastern European belief and practice that in order for the walls of a building to stand, someone has to be built into the walls either physically (i.e their body), or metaphysically (i.e their shadow). Ultimately, I was questioning whether, as a woman, it was more important for me to create, or to reproduce. And, why do I have this need? Is it to achieve a sort of immortality, a way to exist beyond my existence, whether through the creation of offspring, or art creation? The shadows represent my personal struggle of what realities/possibilities to choose as a woman artist – art creation vs. procreation.

Late, on many nights, I’ve laid feeling completely motionless, as one perspective of my reality would take hold of my mind. I would begin sinking into this place where the other me experiencing this same life lives. She is the reality but so am I, living this life on the outside. We coexist, we battle, she overtakes me many days and many nights, but none of us ever win and neither of us lose. It is there that VACUUM takes place.

Making Men examines the question of masculinity. This dance film zooms in on 4 individuals in the process of becoming men. As is expected, they proceedunquestioningly into manhood through various stages of their lives, adopting the clearly coded characteristics allowed by society. However, a feeling of unease, in the very depths of their being, oppresses them. They feel uncertainty but also something else, harder to define… Shot in the breathtaking landscape of Zimbabwe, the film features strong and rhythmical choreography but also a special camera work that intensifies emotions inspired by the movement.

Three women arduously traverse an expanse of white paper armed only with black charcoal and their bodies. Drawn from a set of corporeal kinetic investigations which combined the definitions of performance as “that which disappears” and art as “the residual document of its creation”, Secondary Surfaces (Re(de)constructed reconfigures those investigations in a screen dance by exploiting video mediation to further blur the boundaries between dance and visual art. Created by video artist Roma Flowers and choreographer Nina Martin, and informed by far west Texas landscapes, geological time and human kinetic processes, Secondary Surfaces (Re)(de)constructed presents meditations on durational concepts of time and the human relationship to endurance, survival, and community.

The visual layers of this film is co-created with ornamental motifs drawn from Zofia Stryjeńska’s painting “Seasons. November – December (Pageant I – with a deer)”. Fragmentary narration is built of the words of traditional songs in the arrangement and performance of the Maliszów Band, which overlap with the language of contemporary dance, growing out of the inspiration with the Polish and Hutsul folk culture.

De-Eschatology – Charly Santagado, Eriel Santagado – USA – 5:00
De-Eschatology is a physical manifestation of the claustrophobic conditions created by the COVID-19 crisis and the yearning to break free from them. The piece seeks to draw attention to a heightened sense of touch, which directly results from the lack of physical contact many in quarantine face. The film’s trajectory explores the gradual de-escalation of shelter-in-place orders, and its psychological effects.

This film was inspired by a novel about class system discrimination in Japan called “Hakai” by Toson Shimazaki written in the early 1900’s. I am also influenced by the “Black Lives Matter” movement that has pushed me to think deeply about human rights. This story is set in my hometown, and this class-based discrimination existed there even when I was a child and I remember joining in on the prejudice without understanding what it meant. I made this work with the desire to learn.

This work is a piece which plays on a loop in an art gallery – the ending immediately starts at the beginning again, endlessly. We created this ghostly love story while in Kerala, inspired by the layers of history and present day life there.
The Circadian Cycle – Garry Stewart – Australia – 16:11
Filmed within the stunning South Australian landscape, The Circadian Cycle draws upon choreography from Australian Dance Theatre’s award winning mainstage work The Beginning of Nature. Using the dancing body as a metaphor, The Circadian Cycle examines morphology, biological rhythm and animal behaviour. The film charts a day from sunrise to evening, moving through cycles of nature, from nascence and awakening to predation and death. The film was shot in stunning locations across South Australia including: Flinders Chase National Park, Lake Bumbunga, Lake Gairdner, Maslin Beach, Mount Lofty Botanic Garden and Mount Remarkable National Park.

Curator Statement
Over the past few years, my personal artistic process has involved trying to merge with people remotely, to ‘touch’ them, using my body and all its systems and parts; my ‘antennas’. From Whitehorse (a small Northern Canadian city) I was craving physical contact with dancers elsewhere, so I made several dances from my own home. I then attempted to dance ‘with’ people from a distance in a duet. Video became a new medium, and thus a new skin. I digitally layered my body with other dancer’s, doing what I referred to then as choreography-as-editing and we got to ‘touch’ each other. The more I manipulated the works through the editing, the more intimate the duets became. As a dance-artist now working with video, I figured there must be many other dance-artists also working with video, and video-artists working with dance. I wondered, what are other dance artists creating, obsessing about, dealing with, or expressing about skin? I discovered that skin is an amazing metaphor: it is a shell, it is a conduit, it is a home, it is a hiding place, it is a container, it is how we feel and touch and give and receive.
ViDEOSKiN was conceived out of that strong desire to connect with dance and video artists from around the world who deal profoundly with the themes of bodily pleasure, pain, emotional expression, internal thought, human interaction, connection and isolation. The thread that binds this show is ‘skin’ and through this lens, international artists explore ideas of metaphor, race, representation, surfaces, canvasses, boundaries, homes, clothing, screens, organs, and many more. Categorized variably as ‘contemporary dance video-art’, ‘experimental dance film’, ‘dance and new media video’, ‘dance animation’, ‘videodance production’ and ‘dance on camera’, the selected works push boundaries through form and/or content. The richness of substance and the infinite diverseness presented in ViDEOSKiN are awe-inspiring. From intimate pieces to vast and digital works, you can expect to see videos from around the world ranging from one to thirty minutes in length. On view will be 20 hours of videos; you will want to come back to the gallery several times to witness it all!

CONTEMPORARY DANCE VIDEO WORKS
Seeking short contemporary dance film/video works!
The show will run from April 15 – 20, 2021. Opening reception on April 15.
The theme is “skin”; as a metaphor; race, representation, surface, canvas, boundary, home, clothing, a hide, screen, an organ, etc.
Looking for films/video works that push boundaries through form or content, and work made for the gallery. Welcoming short films/video works for ViDEOSKiN – contemporary dance video-art, experimental dance films, dance and new media videos, dance animation, videodance productions, biographical or documentary videos, dance on camera, etc. for application.
Application process:
- Describe your contemporary dance video work in a one paragraph artist statement, explaining how it fits the curated ViDEOSKiN theme.
- Additionally, include a one paragraph bio of the main artist (filmmaker/choreographer/dancer, etc.). Optional: other participating artists’ bios.
- Only shorts will be taken into consideration, the preferred maximum length is 30 minutes and under.
- Please do not submit documentation of a dance piece or live stage performances unless you are sure it meets the thematic criteria.
- Include the duration, year, participating artists, medium and previous showings of the work in your proposal.
- Include 1 (one) still image from your film which, if selected can be used for promotional purposes, include all artist credits.
- Ensure your film/video follows the proper protocol for copyright: The applicant must declare that they have obtained all necessary rights and permissions to present the film/video work. The filmmaker/artist must own or have cleared copyright of all aspects of the submitted work. This includes all music and images used. The curator, the venue and Hinge Arts Projects accept no responsibility, financial or otherwise, in regards to clearing copyrighted material.
- Optional: testimonies, and other useful information. Please don’t send any CVs.
- Submissions will close on: April 10, 2021.
Selection:
- Seeking work which is provocative and innovative without being pornographic.
- Preference will be given to work produced in the past two years.
- Selected artists will be requested to send the video work by file transfer for the exhibition.
